Traders came to the Malabar coast for spice long before it reached the world’s kitchens. Kerala’s high ranges still grow some of the finest cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon and ginger anywhere — on small holdings, cured slowly, much as they have been for generations.
Idukki, where we are based, produces most of India’s small cardamom. We didn’t choose the district for the story; we chose it because that is where the spice is.
The trade, though, runs on distance. By the time a lot reaches an importer, few can say which hillside it grew on. Kassia Naturals was built to shorten that chain — to work at the source rather than add another link between it and the buyer.
We buy lot by lot from Kerala’s spice belt, beginning with our flagship, green cardamom. Each lot is coded, hand-graded, and tested — first at origin, then by an independent laboratory — and ships with a certificate of analysis covering moisture, oil content and cleanliness.
Our spice is single-origin by region: Idukki and the Western Ghats. We can tell you the district, the grade and the season. We cannot yet name the individual holding, so we do not claim to.
Next comes depth. We are building direct relationships with the farms we buy from, so that in time a lot can carry the name of the holding it came from — cardamom first, then the rest of the range, and later dried fruit, herbal cuts and botanicals.
Certifications follow the same principle: we will hold them before we mention them.
Built on trust
Three principles guide us: fair value for the people who grow and tend our spice, quality we can rely on batch after batch, and trade built on relationships that last rather than single transactions. Purity is not negotiable — and trust, like quality, is earned over time.
